External Hard Drive became Read Only
After updating to macOS Sierra on Macbook Pro (Retina 13", Early 2015), my Toshiba External Hard Drive became Read Only.
Had to update NTFS from here: https://www.tuxera.com/ntfs-drives-and-macos-sierra/ and Restart. Working fine now.

The risk is likely you are using a Windows formatted drive (NTFS) which for OS X will read to but not write to without 3rd party software.
The manufacturer of the drive may supply software to allow you to write or you may be required to buy it, it's up to those developers to either keep their software up-to-date or end support for it.
